1. Cleaning parquet wood – preparation

Before you start the process of cleaning dirty parquet, there are a few things you need to do:

  • Identify what the floor is made of. Put a little alcohol on the floor in an area to be covered and inspect the results with a cloth, napkin, or cotton wool. If the color starts to take on or feels sticky, it’s varnish or shellac. When the cloth is clean, the floor is made of polyurethane.
  • Choose the cleaning product. Once you have identified the material, you can choose a suitable cleaning solution for parquet maintenance: the oil-based ones are suitable for lacquered or shellac surfaces, and the wax-based ones are for polyurethane.
  • You will not always need a special cleaning product. Often warm water is enough, especially if you clean it regularly. However, it is important to have the right solution for a deep cleaning and to always perform a test on a surface that is not visible before you start.

2. Parquet maintenance: things you need

In addition to selecting the right cleaning product, there are a few things you will need to clean your hardwood floors:

  • Broom, vacuum cleaner, or brush
  • Mop and a bucket of hot water
  • White alcohol vinegar
  • Durable and absorbent Zewa Premium Standard kitchen towels

3. Step by step guide for parquet cleaning

Once you have all the products at hand, you can start the process of cleaning dirty parquet. Involve the whole family at this time – move the furniture out of the way and prepare the floors for cleaning. Follow these steps, and you will have a clean floor:

  1. Wipe the parquet from dust, vacuum it and sweep it to remove dirt and debris – use the floor vacuum cleaner extension if you have one.
  2. See if all surfaces are clean and sweep away the remaining sand or dust – they can scratch the parquet if they are not removed.
  3. Use a damp kitchen towel to remove dust or particles that have accumulated in the corners.
  4. Take the mop to start cleaning the wooden floor – regular cleaning can be done with a little warm water; however, if you do a dirty parquet cleaning, you can add 120 ml of vinegar in warm water to help remove stubborn stains. Make sure you squeeze the mop before putting it on the floor – it must be moist but not run out of water – and immediately wipe off excess water from the floor to prevent damage from it.
  5. If there are dry stains that the mop cannot remove, use a damp Zewa Premium Standard kitchen towel to remove them by hand.
  6. If that doesn’t work either, use the right special cleaning product – test on a small area before using vinegar or special solutions.
